Jaw Pain and TMJ

Temporomandibular joint and muscle (TMJ) disorder are problems of the chewing muscles and joints that connect your lower jaw to your skull.

Ask your doctor if you experience:

  • Biting or chewing difficulty
  • Noises when opening/closing the mouth
  • Dull aching pain in the face
  • Ear aches, headaches,  and/or jaw pain
  • Reduced or inability to open/close the mouth

Causes of TMJ

  • Bad bite or orthodontic braces
  • Stress and tooth grinding
  • Poor posture
  • Stress
  • Poor diet
  • Lack of Sleep
  • Arthritis
  • Fractures and dislocations
  • Structural problems present since birth

Why Try Physical Therapy

A physical therapist is trained to identify the contributing factors to TMJ problems. They can help develop a treatment plan that focuses on ergonomics, manual therapy, posture training and education, treatment modalities, body alignment and exercises. This will ease or eliminate the pain for patients suffering from TMJ disorders.

Chronic Headaches

Types of headaches

  • Tension headaches – affect both sides of the head, shoulders, and neck
  • Migraine headaches – affects only one side of the head.
  • Cervical headaches – ache begins in the skull and moves around the head.
  • Sinus headaches – gnawing pain behind or under the eyes.

Why Try PT

Physical therapists are highly trained to identify the faulty moving components caused by weak, tight, or injured muscles that stop or change normal motion and cause headaches. A physical therapist can help minimize or even stop headaches by reducing further stress to the patient’s neck and shoulders. The physical therapist may use modalities (like heat, cold, electricity), hands-on manual therapy, exercises, and posture/ body mechanics education to help the patient with chronic headaches.
