Shoulder Pain

In 2006, nearly 7.5 million Americans went to the doctor’s office for a shoulder problem, including shoulder and upper arm sprains and strains. More than 4.1 million of these visits were for rotator cuff problems.

The shoulder is remarkable joint in the body. It is capable of a vast amount of motion in many directions. This also makes it more susceptible to different irritations, disorders, and injuries. Excessive, repetitive, and overhead motion during athletic activities (i.e. sports and exercise) or everyday activities (i.e. gardening, doing dishes) may cause shoulder injuries.

Ask your doctor if you experience:

  • Frequent soreness after activities
  • Difficulty or inability to carry objects
  • Difficulty or inability to use the arm or shoulder
  • Difficulty or inability to raise the arm
  • Difficulty or inability to move the shoulder
  • Pain that occurs during the night or while sleeping
  • Pain that lasts for more than a few days

Causes of Shoulder Pain

  • Bursitis or rotator cuff tendonitis
  • Rotator cuff tear or injury
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Arthritis
  • Calcific tendonitis
  • Shoulder instability
  • Shoulder dislocation
  • Shoulder separation
  • Traumatic injuries, accidents, and fractures

Why Try Physical Therapy

A physical therapist is trained to identify the contributing factors to shoulder pain. They can determine the faulty moving components, weak or tight muscles, and help restore normal motion. Different modalities will be used to increase strength, restore mobility, and regain normal functioning. Patients may also receive hands-on manual therapy and exercises to help with recovery.
